The Best Parks in Denver: Washington Park

The Best Parks in Denver:

Washington Park

Denver is a special place. There aren’t many cities as vibrant as Denver that have a backdrop as spectacular as the Rocky Mountains. Given the amazing geography and atmosphere, Denverites have a spirit for shared outdoor spaces. In turn, this has led to one of the most extensive city park networks in the country. From world-class amphitheaters to the ever-popular micro-parks, Denver Parks & Recreation has it all.

While every park has a special purpose, there are some spectacular ones that stand above the rest. I have decided to create a series in which I write about these parks and what makes them special. There will be the big parks that see a lot of traffic and the very small parks that only people living in the neighborhood surrounding that park will ever visit. However, even these small parks have something special about them.

Washington Park:

Washington Park, or “Wash Park,” is a favorite among Denverites. Situated in South Denver, near the University of Denver, the park is unassuming, and pictures of the park are mostly unimpressive. However, a day at Wash Park is all it takes to hook visitors and convert them to regulars.

The ambiance created by the creaky trees, untroubled lakes, and vibrant gardens is rustic at times. The views of the downtown skyline provide an interesting contrast which defines the park. The dichotomy plays in the park’s favor, allowing space for both visitors interested in a relaxing afternoon and those interested in a high-energy outing alike.

On any given summer day, there are thousands visiting the park. Among them, you can spot rollerbladers, cyclists, walkers, and people fishing. There is, also, no shortage of people playing basketball or tennis on the courts. What often stands out to newcomers to Wash Park, though, are the hundreds of people playing volleyball. It is common to see more than 50 volleyball courts in use at any given time during the weekend or league nights. Joining in on these activities is one of the best ways to meet people in Denver.

If a sporty day isn’t what you’re craving, sitting by the lakes or walking the gravel path along the boundary of the park is a relaxing way to spend time. The gravel path usually sees less traffic than the main path and provides beautiful views of the park and the homes on its border. The fields at the very south and very north ends of the park may be right for you as well. These fields have excellent shade and usually do not have as many people running around, making them tranquil places to picnic or sunbathe.

Whether you are looking to participate in sports, you want to relax in the shade near water, or meet new friends, Wash Park may be one of the best options for all three within the city. When you have had your fix and are ready to move on with your day, Gaylord Street and Old South Pearl Street are both nearby with plenty of food, coffee houses and interesting shopping options.

Tips for Visiting

While the park may be the most exciting during the day, the south side of Wash Park is one of the best sunset spots in Denver. If you hang around until after dark, the park clears out, leaving only a few dozen people. This is one of the best times to visit because the lakes reflect many of the park’s and the surrounding neighborhood’s lights.
